Coast Guard awards Meritorious Public Service Award to Arecibo, Puerto Rico emergency responders

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Rear Adm. Bill Baumgartner, Seventh Coast Guard District Commander, recognized an Arecibo municipal police officer and a municipal rescue specialist during a Meritorious Public Service Award presentation at the Mayor’s Office in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Friday.

The Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award was presented to Gioser Lopez Rosa, a member of Arecibo’s Maritime Police unit and Pablo Ocaña Rodríguez, a member of Arecibo’s Office of Emergency Management, for their actions during the rescue of three teenagers who were trapped by a rip current off the beach in Barrio Obrero, Arecibo, April 21.

The Meritorious Public Service Award is the second highest Coast Guard issued public service award given to those recognized for unusual courage in advancing the Coast Guard’s mission.
