Coast Guard Auxiliary hosting Safe Boating Day event in Annapolis

The Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Maryland Natural Resources Police will host a Safe Boating Day event at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, Md., Saturday, May 30, 2009, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A Coast Guard rescue swimmer demonstration will be performed at noon and free raffle tickets for life jackets will be given out.

For boaters, there will be free vessel safety checks and 30-minute classes offering safe boating techniques such as how to use a GPS, a marine-band radio and cope with emergencies. Additionally, a demonstration using impairment goggles will be conducted with NRP.

For children, there will be Coast Guard boat rides, as well as Coastie, the boating-safety robot and other costumed characters.

The event is traditionally held during National Safe Boating week, which is May 16-22, but was moved as to not coincide with the Maryland Preakness.
