PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Members of the Coast Guard’s Atlantic Area Incident Management Team here have been working around the clock to support the incident commanders conducting disaster relief and humanitarian efforts in Haiti.
“We’re making sure that requests for personnel, aircraft such as C-130s, supplies, American citizen evacuation and medical evacuations are met,” said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Jim Reynolds. “An important part of filling the personnel request is for the Maritime Transportation System Recovery Unit. The Coast Guard’s 11-person team is in Haiti assisting that country’s port authority and industry to facilitate commerce.”
Since the earthquake on Jan. 12, the IMT and 350 members of the Atlantic Area’s staff here have worked with the Coast Guard's Seventh District staff in Miami, Joint Task Force Haiti and USAID to facilitate the evacuation of 987 American citizens, 180 medical evacuations and delivery of 646 first responders.
