Coast Guard Assists Vessel Taking on Water Near Anton Larsen Bay

KODIAK, Alaska – A fishing vessel taking on water near Anton Larsen Bay Wednesday afternoon was assisted by the Coast Guard after calling for help on VHF channel 16.

At 3:50 p.m., the Coast Guard overheard the crew of the 55-foot fishing vessel My Oar report on that they were taking on water.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was immediately launched from Air Station Kodiak after communication with the vessel was lost.

The My Oar was located aground near the boat launch on Anton Larsen Bay. The vessel entered the bay and broke through several hundred yards of ice to reach the boat launch.

A pump and a rescue swimmer were lowered from the helicopter to a nearby road. The pump was able to dewater the vessel. No injuries were reported and the vessel was tied off to the shore as the tide receded. The vessel is aground.

Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak is investigating.

The Coast Guard would like to remind commercial mariners to ensure they have all necessary safety equipment onboard to include a VHF radio, flares and survival suits.
