Coast Guard assists vessel taking on water

HOUSTON- The Coast Guard responded to a report of a vessel taking on water 29 miles south of Sabine, Saturday.

The report was made to Sector Houston/Galveston at 6:30 a.m. via 911. The caller reported that a 24-foot pleasure craft was taking on water with four people onboard. The Coast Guard dispatched a MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Houston and a 41-foot response boat from Station Sabine.

The rescue helicopter arrived on scene first and delivered a rescue swimmer and dewatering pump to the pleasure craft. The rescue swimmer was then able to dewater the vessel and control the incoming water.

The response boat arrived on scene and placed the stricken boat in tow. The pleasure craft’s towing bit broke, and the crew of the pleasure craft was forced to leave the vessel at anchor and depart with the crew of the 41-foot response boat.

The pleasure craft owners have contacted a salvage company to bring their vessel back to Sabine.
