Coast Guard assists U.S. Forest Service to improve critical geese habitat near Cordova

KODIAK, Alaska – A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak based MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew assisted U.S. Forest Service personnel with repairs to geese nesting areas in the Copper River Delta near Cordova Tuesday.

The crews delivered bundles of artificial geese nesting islands by sling load from the helicopter to predetermined remote locations in the Copper River Delta. The crew delivered a total of 50 nesting islands via 14 separate sling loads.

These nesting islands will be installed by USFS personnel to replace fragile nesting areas that have been lost due to flooding.

There are six sub-species of Canada geese in Alaska. Dusky Canada geese are the darkest colored Canada geese in Alaska. They nest only on the Copper River Delta. The population has hovered between 10,000 and 18,000 since the 1980s according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
