Coast Guard Assists Stranded Boaters

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A Coast Guard helicopter crew found two boaters in their disabled boat approximately three miles east of Sapelo Island, Ga. Sunday morning.

Hunter Prim and Bean Perry of Forsyth, Ga., called 911 when their 25-foot vessel called the Sea Dawg became disabled and they started taking on water in rough seas Saturday night. Local law enforcement officials relayed the distress call to Coast Guard Station Brunswick to search for the boaters.

Coast Guard crews from Station Brunswick and Coast Guard Air Station Savannah Ga., searched for the boaters. The helicopter crew spotted the stranded boaters and lowered a hand-held radio to them.

The two men used the radio to arrange for commercial salvage to tow them back to shore.

The Coast Guard recommends boaters have a VHF radio and Emergency Positioning Indicating Beacon when going out on the water. Boaters are also reminded to file a float plan with a family member or friend to assist authorities in case of emergency.
