Coast Guard assists local agencies in search for missing diver near Southport, NC

5th Coast Guard District NewsPORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard is assisting local agencies in the search for a 56-year-old missing diver in the Cape Fear River near Southport, N.C., Saturday.

Missing is Danny Stump.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s 5th District Command Center received a call at approximately 1 p.m. from a friend of Stump reporting the diver missing.

Coast Guard Station Oak Island, N.C., launched crewmembers aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat to assist with the search.

Also searching are members of the North Carolina Marine Patrol, Oak Island Water Rescue, Sunny Point Dive Team and helicopter crews from New Hanover County and Brunswick County.
