Coast Guard assists in search for missing swimmer

BARINGTON, R.I. — The Coast Guard provided assistance to the Barrington Police Department, Barrington, R.I. Wednesday, in a search for a missing swimmer.

Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England was asked for assistance at 1:45 a.m. when they were notified that a fisherman who was fishing on top of a bridge went missing after he decided to go for a swim to cool off.

Coast Guard Station Castle Hill launched a 25-foot response boat at 2:22 a.m. and Air Station Cape Cod provided a HH-60J Jayhawk Helicopter at 2:49 a.m.

The helicopter provided a shoreline search and the response boat provided a barrier search.

At 6:28 a.m. the Coast Guard suspended its search.

At the time of this release the person is still missing.

“We were able to offer our assistance to the Barrington Police Department,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Nicholas Sawka, operations unit controller at Sector Southeastern New England. “This is always a difficult out come to accept in any situation.”
