Coast Guard assists in search for fisherman

BOSTON – Coast Guard crews from Rhode Island and Cape Cod, Mass., assisted in a search for a fisherman who fell in the water while fishing from a break wall in Matunuck Point, R.I., today.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod and two boatcrews from Coast Guard Station Point Judith, R.I., joined the local police and fire department in the search for the man after receiving a call around 6:40 p.m., from a 911 operator requesting Coast Guard assistance.

The South Kingston, R.I., fire department found the man approximately 30 yards off shore of Matunuck Point around 7:30 p.m.

Local EMS transported the fisherman to a local hospital where his condition is unknown.

“The Coast Guard crews and local agencies worked well together in order to quickly locate the fisherman,” said Lt. Cdr. Chris Cederholm, the command duty officer at Sector Southeastern New England. “Overall it was a good, clean working system.”
