Coast Guard Station Jones Beach assists in multiple-agency rescue near Wantagh, N.Y.

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard is assisting in a multiple-agency rescue of injured boaters after their 40-foot boat ran aground near Wantagh, N.Y., at approximately 7:30 p.m. today.

It was reported that seven people were on board and all sustained serious injuries.

“A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Jones Beach arrived on scene shortly after the initial report was made by SeaTow,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Anthony Kozak, a Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound watchstander. “The Jones Beach crew was able to assist in locating all of the boaters after an initial report that two people were missing.”

The New York City Police Department, the Wantagh Fire Department and Nassau Country Police Department are working to medically evacuate the boaters from the scene.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
