GRAND MARAIS, MI – Multiple Coast Guard and state assests responded to the grounding of the Tug Seneca located approximately 18 nautical miles east of Grand Marais.
There was no apparent damage to the tug and no apparent danger of pollution.
Coast Guard Cutters Katmai Bay and Alder, Station Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Mich., searched for the adrift tug. The tug was being towed from Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., to Grand Marais by the Tug Susan Hoey when the lines between them parted sending the unmanned Seneca adrift on the lake.
The search was conducted under limited weather conditions throughout the weekend.
The Seneca was discovered by the Coast Guard Cutter Alder, who was diverted from working aids to navigation missions. There was no apparent pollution or damage to the vessel.
Coast Guard crews are working with the Department of Natural Resources and the tug company to ensure the tug makes it to its final destination.
