MIAMI – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Seneca is responding to a distress call from a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., man sailing with his dog on a 36-foot sailing vessel 75 northeast of the Turks and Caicos Islands.Tracey Geiger, age unknown, his dog, departed Fort Lauderdale on the Caribbean Rose and were heading to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, the rudder northeast of Turks and Caicos. radioed for help around noon today.
The Caribbean Rose is currently adrift in eight-foot seas and the weather is expected to deteriorate due to approaching storms. The cutter Seneca is expected to arrive on scene early Thursday morning. crew planning to tow the vessel to the nearest safe haven, possibly in the Turks and Caicos.
Geiger is reported to be in good health with the necessary safety equipment and enough food to last five days and water to last 10 days. has all the appropriate survival gear on board including a life-raft, an emergency positioning indicating radio beacon and flares.
