SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Coast Guard assisted a fishing vessel taking on water near Port Royal Sound, S.C., Sunday at approximately 9 a.m.
The Miss Melissa, a 66-foot commercial fishing vessel from Port Royal, started taking on water Sunday morning and requested assistance from the Coast Guard via VHF channel 16. Coast Guard Station Tybee Island, Ga., and Good Samaritans then launched to assist the vessel.
The Coast Guard crew and nearby Good Samaritans brought de-watering pumps aboard the vessel to help keep it afloat. Commercial salvage then arrived and towed the vessel back to Port Royal.
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
