Coast Guard assists fire department in search for missing swimmer

HONOLULU – The Coast Guard is assisting Hawaii County Fire Department in the search for a missing swimmer last seen near Kehena Beach, on the southeast side of the Big Island, Sunday.

Hawaii County Fire Department began searching at approximately 3 p.m. and searched until sunset. Information from the reporting source indicated the swimmer was swept off the cliff and into the rough waters at Kehena Beach.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu watchstanders received notification at approximately 2:46 p.m. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew at 3:25 p.m. and an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew at 3:55 p.m. to assist in the search.

According to witness statements, the swimmer is a 30-year-old male Caucasian with brown hair and beard, weighing between 180 and 220 pounds.
