Coast Guard assists father and son with disabled sailing vessel

SEATTLE – (D13 Public Affairs) The Coast Guard rescued two people who were in distress after their 12-foot sailing vessel began taking on water between James Island and Fidalgo Island, Wash., today.

Coast Guard Group Port Angeles received a 911 relay call from the Skagit County Dispatch at 10:58 a.m., that a sailing vessel with a father and his 12-year-old on board were in distress and in need of assistance.

A 33-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Bellingham was diverted to the scene along with an MH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles.

Once on scene, the crew from Coast Guard Station Bellingham was able to safely evacuate both the father and son and successfully tow the vessel to safe harbor at Washington Park.
