Coast Guard assists disabled fishing vessel

 SEATTLE – The Coast Guard assisted a disabled 52-foot fishing vessel 80 miles west of Yaquina Bay, Ore on Monday.

The fishing vessel Melville contacted Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay via satellite phone around 8.30 a.m. and reported that they had been disabled and adrift for the past forty-eight hours with three people aboard. They also reported that their satellite phone had a weak signal with a low battery.

A Coast Guard C-130 Hercules crew from Air Station Sacramento along with the Coast Guard Cutter Barracuda, homeported in Humboldt Bay, Calif., were diverted to assist in the search and rescue operation. Once on scene, the Barracuda established communications with the disabled fishing vessel.

The Melville was put in tow by the crew of the Barracuda and should arrive at Newport, Ore. Tuesday around 1 a.m.
