Coast Guard assists fishing vessel near Florence, Ore.

SEATTLE – The Coast Guard assisted a 54-foot fishing vessel and its crewmember five miles north of the Siuslaw River entrance, Friday.

Suislaw River barThe master of the fishing vessel Back Tack contacted the Coast Guard on VHF channel 16 at approximately 12:20 a.m., to report the vessel was taking on water.

A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River, Ore., launched in addition to a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station North Bend, Ore. The helicopter crew lowered a dewatering pump to the crewman aboard the Back Tack to mitigate the flooding.

Station Siuslaw River took the vessel in tow, and later transferred the tow to an awaiting Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay, which towed the vessel into Newport, Ore.

No injuries have been reported.
