Coast Guard assists boaters after 2 vessels collide near Baltimore

James RankinBALTIMORE — The Coast Guard assisted two boaters after their vessels collided Wednesday in Bear Creek near Baltimore.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region received a report via VHF-FM marine radio channel 16 at approximately 2:40 p.m. stating two sailboats had collided and one of them was taking on water.

Sector Maryland-NCR issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small boat crew from Coast Guard Station Curtis Bay. Coast Guard Cutter James Rankin was already underway in the vicinity of Bear Creek and diverted to assist. Maryland Natural Resources Police and Baltimore Police Department Marine Unit also launched.

A crew aboard an 18-foot Cutter Boat-Medium from the Rankin assisted with dewatering efforts on one sailboat. The other sailboat suffered minor damage.

No injuries were reported.
