Coast Guard assists ailing man on Bald Island Island, NC

29 MayportWILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard assisted an ailing man after he suffered a seizure on Bald Head Island Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received a call from Coast Guard Station Oak Island at 3:55 a.m. that the Bald Head Island Fire Department requested medical transport for an 80-year-old man who had suffered a seizure.

Sector North Carolina watchstanders launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Station Oak Island at 4:20 a.m.

The RBS crew arrived at the Bald Head Island ferry landing at 4:30 a.m and picked up the patient, one of his family members and EMS personnel. The Oak Island crew transported them to Deep Point Marina in Southport by 4:43 a.m.

An ambulance transported the patient to Dosher Memorial Hospital.

“Our working relationships with local agencies like the Bald Head Island Fire Department are key to serving the people as efficiently as possible,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Quenten Lehrschall, the coxswain of the RBS crew. “One of our ongoing priorities is to help connect people in need with proper medical care.”
