Coast Guard assists 3 after boat capsizes near Port O’Conner, Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard assisted three boaters after their vessel capsized near Port O’Conner, Texas, Saturday.

Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders received a report that a 20-foot vessel capsized with four people onboard approximately 17 miles south of Pass Cavello on Matagorda Island. All four were able to safely swim to shore.

A Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew arrived on scene, recovered three of the boaters and transferred them to emergency medical services personnel at Victoria Regional Airport. The fourth boater was picked up by a family member by boat and taken to Port O’Connor. The four boaters were reported in good condition.

“All persons onboard were equipped with and properly wearing life jackets prior to the vessel capsizing,” said Cmdr. Keith Pierre, Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi chief of response. “Having their life jackets on and ready for an emergency played a vital role in the boaters getting to shore safely.”
