Assisted were two Canadians, a man and a woman, and another man, who was a U.S. Citizen. The boaters reported they were transiting from Tortola, British Virgin Islands to the United States Thursday night, when mechanical problems left the Illusion II adrift, since the 53-foot vessel was also dismasted from damages sustained during Hurricane Maria. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – A Coast Guard Boat Station San Juan boat crew assisted three mariners aboard the disabled sailing vessel Illusion II Friday, approximately 11 nautical miles off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Assisted were two Canadians, a man and a woman, and another man, who was a U.S. Citizen. The boaters reported they were enroute from Tortola, British Virgin Islands to the United States Thursday night, when mechanical problems left the Illusion II adrift, since the 53-foot vessel was also dismasted from damages sustained during Hurricane Maria.

At 8 a.m. Friday watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Juan received a call from a 911 Emergency Operator, who placed them in direct contact with the distressed boaters. A Station San Juan boat crew, aboard a 45-foot Response Boat Medium, responded to locate the Illusion II and render assistance as needed.

Upon arriving on scene, the Coast Guard boat crew placed the Illusion II in a stern tow and safely towed the disabled vessel to the San Juan Bay Marina.

“I’m glad we were able to locate and tow the Illusion II before worsening situations arose,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Mason Ormsby, Boat Station San Juan 45-foot Response Boat Medium coxswain. “This was a great experience for our new crewmembers who, along with seasoned crew, worked seamlessly and efficiently to render assistance and bring the boaters and their vessel to safety.”
