WASHINGTON – The Coast Guard announced the change in directorship of the Coast Guard Investigative Service at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters here Friday.
Michael Berkow relieved Daniel Butler as the senior federal criminal investigative executive in the Coast Guard who provides executive direction, leadership and management of CGIS.
In January 2012, Butler assumed the position of deputy assistant commandant of intelligence and criminal investigations here. David Leighton served as acting CGIS director in the interim and will return to his post as deputy director of CGIS.
Berkow is scheduled to assume command of CGIS Monday.
Berkow has more than 20 years of experience as a law enforcement officer and executive. Most recently, Berkow served as president of Kroll Security Group, an international security company, providing consulting services to law enforcement agencies in the United States and internationally. He served as the chief of the police departments in Savannah, Ga. as well as Irvine, South Pasadena and Coachella, Calif. He also served as the deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. He has prior federal service as a project manager for the U.S. Department of Justice, where he managed a variety of international policing projects in Central and South America, Somalia and Haiti. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and public policy studies from Kalamazoo College, a Juris Doctor degree from Syracuse University College of Law and a Master of Science degree in leadership and management from Johns Hopkins University. Berkow is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.
