Coast Guard announces waterway restrictions for 2019 Sail Grand Prix

NEW YORK – The U.S. Coast Guard will establish a safety zone in the vicinity of Battery Park and Pier 26, Hudson River for the 2019 Sail Grand Prix, June 20-22.

The safety zone will be effective throughout the duration of the Sail Grand Prix sailing regatta and be enforced from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The public is not permitted to loiter on the south, east, or west sides of the limited access area and are encouraged to remain in designated spectator areas near Liberty Landing and immediately to the north of the safety zone.

The public will be required to hold position, not at anchor, and adhere to instructions given by the on-scene Coast Guard designated representative or other law enforcement officials. This information will be broadcasted via VHF-FM channels 13 and 16.

All other commercial ships and recreational boats not observing the event must remain outside the race box and are permitted to use the transit lanes on the western side. People using paddle craft may transit on the easternmost edge of the Hudson River and must not loiter outside designated spectator areas.

Vessel Traffic Service New York will implement a measure closing the traffic lane to the following categories of vessels, unless specifically authorized by the captain of the port or a designated representative:

  • Power-driven vessels of 131 feet or more in length.
  • Towing vessels of 26 feet or more in length.

The special local regulation will extend from the following points: 40°43’31” N, 074°00’57” W, thence to 40°43’34” N, 074°01’46” W, thence to 40°42’06” N, 074°02’15” W, thence to 40°41’57” N, 074°02’06” W, thence to 40°41’57” N, 074°01’14” W, thence to 40°42’18” N, 074°01’08” W, thence to 40°42’25” N, 074°01’10” W (all coordinates are NAD 1983) and thence along the shore to the point of beginning.

All vessels shall maintain a 100-yard distance from any Coast Guard vessel at all times.

This event will consist of six 50-foot foiling sailing yachts, each sailed by professional sailors. Multiple heats will be held during a three-hour interval each day of the scheduled event. Various event support vessels will work in conjunction with local law enforcement and rescue vessels to ensure safety during the event.
