Coast Guard announces Port Access Route Study comment period

Coast Guard Alaska News
JUNEAU, Alaska — The Coast Guard began a six month comment period on a Port Access Route Study on Friday.

The goal of the study, which began in 2010, is to help reduce the risk of maritime casualties and increase the efficiency of commercial vessel traffic movement, in anticipation of increasing vessel traffic in the region.

Based on comments received in 2010, the Coast Guard has developed a potential vessel routing system for the area. The routing measures consist of a series of four nautical mile wide, two-way transit routes, coupled with precautionary areas at junction points.

The Coast Guard is seeking comments from as many different waterway users and groups as possible. The comment period will be open from Dec. 5, 2014 to June 3, 2015.
