Coast Guard announces joint-agency exercise in New York Harbor

Department of Homeland Security LogoNEW YORK – The Coast Guard is advising mariners of a joint-agency anti-terrorism exercise scheduled to take place in the waters throughout New York Harbor April 7, 2011, between 12 noon and 4 p.m.

Vessel radio traffic during the exercise will be preceded by the words “This is a drill, this is a drill.”

The Coast Guard is participating in the maritime portion of the tri-state exercise, previously announced by New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.  The exercise is part of the federal Securing the Cities Initiative (STC), and 150 law enforcement and other first responder agencies in the region are scheduled to participate.  The exercise is designed to evaluate a joint response organization’s ability to detect and interdict radiological materials.
