Coast Guard announces Hudson River safety zones for Sunday boat race

Northeast Atlantic Coast Guard NewsNEW YORK – The Captain of the Port of New York will establish and enforce a safety zone for the New York Super Boat Grand Prix on Sunday, September 09, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The zone covers all waters of the Lower Hudson River south of a line drawn from the northeast corner of Pier C/(4thStreet), Hoboken, N.J. (40-44.403N 074-01.478W) to the northwest corner of Pier 54/(Gansevoort Street), Manhattan, N.Y. (40-44.357N 074-00.696W) and north of a line drawn from to Jersey City, N.J. shore location (40-42.699N, 074-02.037W) to (40-42.155N, 074-01.817W) to the northwest corner of Pier A, Manhattan, N.Y. (40-42.264N, 074-01.120W).

The Coast Guard on-scene commander (OSC) will control access to the safety zone and monitor VHF-FM channel 13 and 16 during the event. All vessels will be permitted to transit along the Manhattan side of the Hudson River with OSC approval until the start of the race. At that time, the Coast Guard will prohibit all non-commercial vessels from transiting the safety zone during the duration of the event. Commercial vessels seeking to transit the safety zone must obtain OSC approval by contacting OSC via VHF-FM channel 13 and 16 prior to transit. Approved commercial vessels will only be allowed to transit along the Manhattan side of the Hudson River and must maintain a 100-yard separation from the race course and race vessels at all times. Ferry vessels will be permitted to operate from Morris Canal during the event. Recreational vessels are prohibited from entering the safety zone during the enforcement period.
