Great Lakes Coast Guard NewsTOLEDO, Ohio — Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Toledo announces Monday important safety information for mariners transiting near U.S. Naval vessels visiting the Port of Toledo and the Maumee River as part of official War of 1812 Bicentennial Commemoration events.

Crews aboard the USS De Wert and USS Hurricane, along with the Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay, are scheduled to arrive in Toledo on Aug. 23 and berth on the Maumee River through Aug. 26.

A naval vessel protection zone will be in place for the protection and security of the vessels.

Mariners are restricted from approaching within 100 yards of any U.S. Naval vessel and, when within 500 yards, mariners must operate at the minimum speed necessary to maintain a safe course.

Mariners are also requested to follow all directions given by local, state and federal officials on the water.  Violations of a naval vessel protection zone are a felony and are punishable by up to six years in prison and/or up to $250,000 in fines.
