Coast Guard and Utah rescue teams medevac downed helicopter crew

SALT LAKE CITY – Coast Guard and local rescue crews medevaced five crew members from an Elizabeth City, N.C., based MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter that went down in the Rocky Mountains Wednesday approximately 50 miles east of Salt Lake City.

The list of rescued with ages and hometowns:

  • Cmdr. Patrick Shaw, 37, Juneau, Ala.
  • Lt. Cmdr. Steven Cerveny, 40, Lincoln, Neb.
  • Petty Officer 2nd Class Gina Panuzzi, 31, Lacey Thurston, Wash.
  • Petty Officer 3rd Class Darren M. Hicks, 22, Oroville, Wash.
  • Petty Officer 3rd Class Edward Sychra, 26, Blanchard, Ind.

Shaw and Panuzzi were reported to have internal injuries and were taken to the University of Utah Hospital. Cerveny who was reported to have a broken leg was taken to a local hospital. Hicks and Sychra were reported uninjured and were taken from the scene by ground rescue crews.

Air Station Elizabeth City is sending a team of investigators to the scene where an investigation will be conducted Thursday.
