Coast Guard and state agencies respond to chlorine gas release

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard, the La. Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and the La. State Police HAZMAT team responded to a small chlorine gas release at the Oxy Chem facility in Hahnville, La., today.

The chlorine gas release took place at approximately 9:30 a.m., lasted approximately two hours and was secured by Oxy Chem personnel. Eleven Oxy Chem employees were treated at the facility for minor inhalation-related symptoms.

There is currently no public health hazard from the release, as facility personnel have conducted air monitoring and confirmed with federal and state agencies that there were no reportable levels of chlorine gas detected.

“All partnering agencies worked closely with the facility to quickly resolve this incident,” said Lt. Cmdr. Kim Keel, chief of the Incident Management Division for Coast Guard Sector New Orleans.
