Coast Guard and Navy Search for Missing Kayakers

San Pedro, Calif – The US Coast Guard and US Navy are searching for two missing kayakers near San Nicholas Island off the coast of southern California.  They were last seen at noon in two six-foot blue and white ocean kayaks.  They left with two other friends this morning planning on kayaking around the island. The Coast Guard received the call for assistance at 2:30 p.m. and immediately responded with a rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles and an 87-foot Coast Guard cutter.  The US Navy is conducting searches of the island’s shore and beaches by land with a Navy helicopter en route to join the search.

The missing men are both members of the US Navy and stationed on San Nicholas Island as part of a detachment from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion One based in Gulfport, Miss.
