Coast Guard and Dare County search for missing bridge worker

DARE COUNTY, N.C. – The Coast Guard and Dare County officials are searching for a worker who fell 15-20 feet off the Old Manns Harbor Bridge between Manteo and Manns Harbor at approximately 8 a.m. Tuesday.

A Dare County 911 operator contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders at 8:07 a.m. stating they received a report that Sydney Valesco had fallen into the water near the middle of the bridge.

One of Valesco’s co-workers jumped in after him to assist, but was unable to recover him. The co-worker was rescued by a Dare County Central small boat.

A rescue boat crew from Station Oregon Inlet and a rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City joined three Dare County boat crews in the search for the missing man. A dive team from the Dare County Fire Department is also responding to search.
