Coast Guard and CBP personnel recover multiple bundles of marijuana in Gulf of Mexico

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection personnel recovered multiple bundles of marijuana in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of South Padre Island Tuesday night at approximately 10 p.m.

Coast Guard Station South Padre Island’s 33-foot Special Purpose Craft – Law Enforcement boat crew interdicted the suspect vessel while conducting a routine patrol of the area.

The vessel dumped approximately 1400 lbs of contraband into the Gulf of Mexico in order to evade capture by the US Coast Guard boat. US Coast Guard and US Customs Border Protection Air and Marine Division officials searched the area and recovered several of the discarded bales of marijuana.

The suspected boat was last seen crossing south of the US/Mexico border.

The contraband was transferred to Immigration Customs Enforcement Agents.
