Coast Guard and Broward County Sheriff’s Office rescue 5 people from overturned boat.

d7MIAMI — A Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale boatcrew rescued four men from the water after their vessel capsized one nautical mile east of Port Everglades inlet Wednesday evening.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Miami command center received a cell phone call from a person clinging to the hull of a capsized fishing vessel requesting assistance. The watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale and from Coast Guard Air Station Miami to begin searching for the people in the water.

The Station Fort Lauderdale boatcrew arrived on scene and recovered four males from the water. A fifth male was recovered by a Broward County Sheriff’s Office marine unit and was transported to the hospital.

The Coast Guard reminds all boaters to take the necessary safety precautions to ensure a safe outing, including making sure you have a marine radio to call for help. Don’t rely on a cell phone since you may not get service away from shore.
