Coast Guard allowing vessel traffic through Mobile Ship Channel

Coast Guard 8th District NewsMOBILE, Ala. The Coast Guard Captain of the Port for Mobile is allowing vessels to transit the Mobile River, Friday, after the river was closed to traffic following an oil spill at the Gulf Coast Asphalt facility.

The Coast Guard is queuing vessels to move through the impacted area to avoid disturbance of containment and collection efforts in the channel.

“Vessels transiting through the affected zone must still obtain permission,” said Rose. “We are using measures to control their movement so that vessels do not impact clean-up operations or pose a threat to the environment by transferring any oil outside of the containment areas as they transit through.”

Clean-up workers are in place to wash hulls of oiled vessels before they are allowed to depart the impacted area.

Clean up and recovery operations of the oil spilled in the Mobile River and the Gulf Coast Asphalt facility are ongoing.
