Coast Guard Airlifts Man During Extreme Weather

JUNEAU, Alaska – A Coast Guard rescue helicopter medevaced a 51-year-old male from the fishing vessel Island Enterprise, which was 115 miles north of Dutch Harbor, Thursday evening during extreme weather conditions.

The rescue helicopter transported the mariner to St. Paul Island, where he was transferred to local emergency medical services (EMS). A crew from a PenAir cargo plane volunteered to transfer the patient to Anchorage. The Coast Guard EMTstayed with the patient during a flight from St. Paul to Anchorage provided by PenAir.

The weather conditions during the operation included winds of 30-40kts, 15-20ft seas, and a -3 degree temperature.

The fishing vessel was experienced with Coast Guard helicopter hoisting operations, which helped make the hoist go smoothly despite extreme weather and sea conditions.

The condition of the patient is unknown at this time.
