Coast Guard Airlifts Injured Man Near Edisto Island, SC

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard airlifted an injured man to safety approximately 25-miles southeast of Edisto Island, S.C., today at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Fredrick Knack, 62, of Charlotte, N.C., was aboard the 25-foot chartered fishing vessel Cold Beer when he injured his leg and his shoulder and suffered a cut on his head, his shoulder and leg. The master of the vessel radioed the Coast Guard at 1:15 p.m. over the vessel’s VHF marine radio for help.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Savannah, Ga., conducting training was diverted to airlift the man to safety. A Coast Guard rescue swimmer jumped into the water and swam to Knack’s aid. The rescue swim administered first aid on the injured boater.

The helicopter crew hoisted the man into the helicopter and transported him to Charleston Executive Airport where was transferred to EMS.
