HONOLULU — A Coast Guard rescue aircrew hoisted an injured man from a cargo vessel approximately 12 miles south of Oahu Wednesday at approximately 6 a.m.
A Coast Guard flight mechanic aboard a rescue helicopter from Air Station Barbers Point hoisted the 28-year-old man from the Norwegian-flagged motor vessel Taronga.
The injured man, suffering from a broken knee, was flown to Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, where local emergency medical services personnel were waiting. The man was then transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center.
The cargo vessel’s master contacted Coast Guard rescue coordinators at approximately 4 p.m. Monday and reported the distress.
“It was an excellent example of the Coast Guard’s ability to coordinate with our international maritime partners,” said Lt. Peggy Britton, a search and rescue coordinator with the Coast Guard’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center here.
