Coast Guard airlifts 2 from disabled sailboat near Oregon Inlet

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard rescued two men from a disabled 46-foot boat in shallow water near the jetty at Oregon Inlet, N.C., Monday night.

Towboat US notified Station Oregon Inlet watchstanders at 8:27 p.m. that the sailboat Palomar was disabled in water too shallow for them to respond.

A rescue boat crew from the station was also unable to reach the craft because of the shallow water.

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City arrived on scene, hoisted the two crewmembers, Mark Smith and John Krieger, and took them to Station Oregon Inlet, where emergency medical personnel were waiting.

EMS determined the men had no health issues, and the men did not request hospitalization.

The vessel was refloated Tuesday by Towboat US.
