Coast Guard aircrew rescues hiker near Craig Alaska

KODIAK, Alaska – A hiker lost on Sunny Hay Mountain east of Craig was rescued late Thursday night by an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka.

Personnel at the Coast Guard Sector Juneau command center received a call from the Klawock-based Alaska State Troopers about 10:55 p.m. requesting assistance to locate the 60-year-old man. The rescue helicopter crew was launched at 12:30 a.m. and arrived on scene to begin their search at 2 a.m.

The crew located the man using forward-looking infrared radar after 15 minutes on scene. He was hoisted safely aboard with an injured Klawock search and rescue team member. Both men were delivered to Klawock about 2:51 a.m.

An Air Station Sitka aircrew also medevaced a 90-year-old man suffering from symptoms of a stroke from the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl 23 miles southwest of Juneau in Chatham Strait to Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau Thursday evening.
