Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City honored by Special Olympics Michigan for outstanding service

Coast Guard District 9 NewsTRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Mich., was named an Outstanding Agency at the Special Olympics Hall of Fame Awards Banquet Saturday in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

Once a year, Special Olympics Michigan gives Outstanding Service Awards to acknowledge groups and individuals who have stood out for their support and friendship.

“With the support of dedicated Michigan volunteers, the Special Olympic athletes receive quality athletic experiences, while developing life skills and a sense of community,” said Kimberly Purdy, public relations director for Special Olympics Michigan.

For years, Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City has provided support to athletes and volunteers for several events; including flyovers for the State Summer Games, State Winter Games and the Mackinac Bridge during the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Air Station Traverse City also landed and conducted a static display during the State Winter Games, which gave athletes an opportunity to see the MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter and aircrew up close. In addition, air station crewmembers participate yearly in the annual Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for the Special Olympics Organization.
