Coast Guard Air-lifts Unresponsive Kayaker

FORKS, Wash. – The Coast Guard airlifted an unresponsive male kayaker on Lake Ozette, Wash., near Olympic National Park last night.

Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles received a call around 7:30 p.m. from a 911 dispatch that two male kayakers had overturned their kayak and were in distress on Lake Ozette. A Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was in the area and was diverted to the scene.

Upon arrival, the helicopter crew found that both kayakers had made it to shore and were being assisted by campers. A Coast Guard rescue swimmer was lowered onto the shore to assess the scene. One of the two males was hypothermic but responsive and was being tended to by the campers. The other male was unresponsive and needed immediate medical evacuation.

The Coast Guard hoisted the unresponsive kayaker into the helicopter and a rescue swimmer administered CPR. The victim was taken to Forks Airport where an ambulance was waiting to take him to the hospital.
