Coast Guard Air Facility Newport rescues surfers from cliff in Newport, Ore.

d13WARRENTON, Ore. — A Coast Guard helicopter crew hoisted two surfers from a cliff south of Yaquina Head Light in Newport, Saturday.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport safely transferred the surfers over to Newport Fire and Rescue personnel after landing on the nearby beach.

Coast Guard Sector North Bend watchstanders received a call from Lincoln County Dispatch personnel after good Samaritans on the beach reported the distressed surfers.

While the surfers had no reported injuries, a reminder for local mariners to take adequate precautions for weather. Situations like this can happen, but planning can help prevent tragedy.

Reported weather on scene was clear with 15 mph winds, 4 to 6-foot high seas with an air temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit and water temperature of 44 degrees Fahrenheit.
