Coast Guard air crews warn boaters as winter storm approaches

Northeast Atlantic Coast Guard News
BOSTON — Coast Guard crews throughout New England warned boaters to prepare and be safe as winter storm Nemo approached New England, Thursday.

Stations along the coast issued radio broadcasts and communicated with partner organizations to warn of approaching weather conditions and help the maritime community prepare. Out of Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, an HU-25 Falcon Jet overflew offshore regions to communicate directly with vessels and issue a general broadcast to any vessel within range.

Throughout the region, Coast Guard crews also prepared their own boats and facilities to ensure they would be mission-ready throughout the storm.

The 1st Coast Guard District is responsible for protecting 2,000 miles of shoreline from New Jersey to Canada and more than 20,000 commercial fishing vessels and their crew. Crews train year-round to handle the unique weather challenges in the Northeast.
