Coast Guard air crew medically evacuates injured Maui man

HONOLULU — A U.S. Coast Guard C-130 air crew conducted a medical evacuation of a 25-year-old man from Maui to Oahu Wednesday.

Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) watch standers here received a call from a Hawaii State Department of Health official about a man who was injured in a 3:45 a.m. head-on car accident on Maui.

A Coast Guard C-130 long-range search aircraft crew from Air Station Barbers Point was en route to Kahului International Airport with a Disaster Medical Assist Team (DMAT) at 6:15 a.m. to pick up the man. The crew returned to Honolulu International Airport, where City and County of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services personnel transferred him to an ambulance at 8:15 a.m. The car accident victim was then transported to The Queen’s Medical Center.

The inter-island rescue effort was coordinated between a Coast Guard flight surgeon, a Hawaii State Department of Health doctor and JRCC watch standers.
