SAN PEDRO, Calif. – The Coast Guard responded to a 27-foot disabled commercial fishing vessel, approximately 35 miles north of Morro Bay, Calif., Sept. 5, 2012.
Coast Guard Station Morro Bay received a call from the vessel stating they were disabled about one mile offshore.
The Coast Guard launched a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Morro Bay and requested the vessel’s captain to stay in contact with the Coast Guard Command Center in San Pedro. Once on-scene, the motor lifeboat crew towed the vessel safely back to shore.
“I am happy that our boat crew was able to get on-scene quickly and rescue this disabled fishing vessel from a remote location before the situation became more serious. Good communications with the fishing boat, facilitated by a working marine radio onboard was the key to us finding out about their predicament and locating them without delay. This case serves as a reminder that all boaters should carry proper safety and communications equipment, tell someone where they are going and when they will return, and use lifejackets to ensure their safety on the water” said Capt. James Jenkins, Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach Commander.
