BOSTON — The 1st Coast Guard District is preparing for a coastal storm expected to impact the area starting Saturday afternoon.

Storm-force wind gusts of up to 50 mph are possible with seas reaching up to 20 feet.

Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod launched aircraft to fly storm tracks at 8:00 a.m. warning mariners in the area. The Coast Guard Cutters Sanibel, Chinook, and Campbell are in a recall status and are ready to respond.

The Coast Guard recommends boaters secure their craft at the mooring and immediately report it to the nearest Coast Guard station if it becomes missing.

“This storm will start to impact us later this afternoon and into the evening,” Chief Petty Officer Jeremy Blanton, the operations unit coordinator at the 1st District Command Center in Boston. “We are warning mariners and advising they leave the area and make preparations for heavy weather.”
