Coast Guard’s Annual Southeast Alaska Blanket, Coat and Toy Drive Begins

JUNEAU, Alaska – The Coast Guard Cutter Liberty‘s annual Blanket, Coat and New Toy Drive for Southeast Alaska is set to begin Tuesday.

Bins donated by Taku Fisheries will be placed throughout Juneau to include locations at Costco, Wal-Mart, Safeway, Alaska & Proud, Super Bear Supermarket, Nugget Mall and the Juneau Federal Building. The community will have the opportunity to begin donating items between Tuesday and December 1.

The Coast Guard has developed close ties with communities throughout Alaska and understands the resource challenges of living in remote areas. By supporting the Coat, Blanket and New Toy drive we are helping to meet some of these needs at a time of year when the spirit of giving is at its highest.

The crew of the Cutter Liberty will then make deliveries of the donated items to the communities of Hoonah, Angoon, Kake, Pelican and Elfin Cove between December 8 and December 12.

“It is an honor and privilege to participate in this year’s Blanket, Coat and Toy Drive,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jon Kreischer, commanding officer of the Cutter Liberty. “Last year’s drive was a huge success and I can attest to the overwhelming gratitude from each community for the donations. I would like to thank all those volunteering their time and efforts to make this drive possible and the residents of Juneau for their annual support of this worthy cause.”

Following the collection period, Alaska Laundry and Dry Cleaners is donating their time and equipment to fully clean all the items donated. Les Schwab Tire Center is providing 300 heavy-duty tire bags to keep the donated items dry during delivery.

“It’s a great way to give to the community”, said Neil McKinnon, president of Alaska Laundry & Dry Cleaning. “We do what we do best and the donated coats and blankets are a direct benefit to the remote Alaskan communities.”

Working together with the residents of Juneau, it is our hope that we can make the holidays a little brighter for some Southeast Alaska residents. So please bring gently-used coats, blankets, and new toys to collection bins located at Costco, Wal-Mart, Safeway, A&P, Super Bear Supermarket, Nugget Mall, and the Juneau Federal Building before December 1st.
