Coast Gaurd medevacs injured woman from cruise ship near Yakutat

KODIAK, Alaska – A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crew medevaced a 72-year-old woman with a reported head injury from the cruise ship Island Princess 63 miles from Yakutat Tuesday.

The rescue crew arrived on scene at approximately 2:50 p.m. and safely hoisted the injured woman from the ship and flew her to Yakutat for further medevac by commercial life flight to Anchorage.

Coast Guard Sector Juneau command center received the initial call from the ship’s doctor at approximately 11:55 a.m., requesting a medevac of a woman who reportedly suffered a head injury after falling down some stairs.

“The weather conditions were perfect for conducting a safe hoist,” said Lt. Josh Tabor, flight services officer for Air Station Sitka. “We successfully hoisted the patient from the Island Princess and transported her to nearby Yakutat airport for further medevac.”

The woman was admitted to Providence Alaska Medical Center. Her current condition is unknown.
