The Department of Homeland Security on Monday formally announced the award of a $70 million contract to Lockheed Martin Corp., the nation’s largest defense contractor, for secure identification cards for port workers.

The contract supports the deployment of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential, or TWIC, which will be issued by the Transportation Security Administration and Coast Guard to workers who pass government background checks.
